The seven-seater 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB model provides customers with options to have two individual retractable seats to be fixed in the third row. Again, side window airbags were also made available for passengers occupying the third row, together with some storage compartments like USB-C ports. The GLB can also be fitted to become a five-sweater if customers opt for it. Here, the second seat row is folded down into a 40/20/40 split to integrate the backrest inclination adjustment seats.
Every now and then, we’re caught off guard by how good a vehicle is. Such is the case with the all-new 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB. As its name suggests, the GLB slots between Mercedes’ subcompact GLA and the larger and more expensive GLC. It stakes out its own distinctiveness with an upright, boxy shape that faintly mimics the larger and pricier G-Class. Yet the proportions and lower ride height make it seem smaller than it is.
Much of the GLB’s appeal comes from its comfort and technology. The GLB rides a bit softer than other SUVs in its class, and the seats are particularly comfortable over long distances. As a new vehicle, it benefits from all of Mercedes’ latest advanced safety features and driver assistants as well as Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system, which has the best personal assistant-style voice commands in the business.
2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB Class Exterior
Drawing inspiration from both the GLA and the GLC, the new middle brother presents buyers with an interesting mix of the two design philosophies. Marketed towards young couples starting their families, the subcompact draws inspiration from the G-Class wagon, too, giving the standard sleek SUV a boxier aesthetic that advertises its spaciousness. Riding on 18-inch alloy wheels, the Merc comes equipped with fog lights as standard, along with a full suite of LED exterior lighting elements. It can be dressed in slightly sportier apparel through the AMG Line Package, and a panorama roof is available, too. It’s a ruggedly handsome crossover that treads the line between form and function well.
2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB Class Interior
The inside of the GLB is certainly comfortable, with plenty of space to easily accommodate its five-passenger capacity. Power front seats come standard, but to get most of the features Mercedes buyers have come to expect from their purchases, you’ll have to tack on quite a few of the available packages. The infotainment suite is pretty comprehensive, though, and it’s well-positioned for ease of access.
However, the voice controls are extremely finicky. There is very little in the way of standard driver-assistance features, though, which is discouraging in a vehicle aimed at burgeoning families.
GLB Class Performance
Both models of the GLB-Class share identical performance figures, despite each getting a different drivetrain. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine is standard, though, delivering 221 hp and 258 lb-ft to your choice of the front wheels or all four. This gives the little subcompact a lot of zip, allowing it to make the 0-60 mph sprint in under seven seconds – 6.9 seconds to be exact. This is on par with the Audi Q3, but the BMW X1 is a little more performance-driven, making the same claim in just 6.3 seconds with its all-wheel drivetrain. But what the GLB may lack in pure athleticism, it more than makes up for with smooth refinement.
Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class models
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB is a small entry-level luxury SUV with seating for five. An optional third row of seats expands capacity to seven, though those additional passengers will have to be very small.
It comes in two trim levels: the base GLB 250 and the GLB 250 4Matic, which adds an all-wheel drive. Both use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (221 horsepower, 258 lb-ft of torque) connected to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Standard feature highlights include LED headlights, a power liftgate, simulated leather upholstery, 40/20/40-split rear seats that slide and recline, Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking is also included.
Several bundled option packages are available. Among them, we suggest springing for the Premium package that adds blind-spot monitoring, larger 10.25-inch displays, auto-dimming and power-folding mirrors, a hands-free liftgate and keyless entry. The Driver Assistance package is also worth adding. It comes with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, evasive steering assist, emergency stop assists, and active speed control.
