Truly, there’s a Toyota Highlander for every Nigerian, from the upper class down to the lower-middle class. We certainly love our Highlander SUV. It has earlier been announced by Toyota that there will be quite a number of modifications done to the 2023 Highlander.
The Highlander’s standard V-6 has been replaced by a new turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder for 2023. The new engine makes 265 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque; Toyota says the combined fuel economy rating of 24 mpg is equal to that of the outgoing V-6, making us wonder why the switch to fewer cylinders was made. A new 12.3-inch infotainment display is available and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster now comes on Limited and Platinum trims. Those high-end models also gain power-folding exterior mirrors while the XLE and XSE trims add a hands-free power-operated rear liftgate.
2023 Toyota Highlander Exterior
From the exterior, practically nothing was done as regards styling. But the XSE trim is modified with black roof rails, mirror caps and window mouldings. The hybrid Bronze gets the cement colour as an exclusive. It’s also available in wind-chill pearl or midnight black metallic. For exterior paint colours, the 2023 Highlander adds one new hue: Cypress.
The XSE, Limited and Platinum trims have been improved with Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD that takes a more active role in deciding what wheels need power and when. The new Highlander engine maintains the same 24 MPG combined efficiency as the old V6, according to Toyota. The Highlander turbo also retains its 5,000 lbs of maximum towing ability. Toyota also offers a 1,500-watt inverter power outlet in the new Highlander on certain trim levels.
2023 Toyota Highlander Interior
The interior remains stalwart with not many changes to the appointments. Woven cloth seats are standard while customers can find SofTex and perforated leather trims as they move up the trim line. For the cabin, harvest beige and glazed caramel interiors now feature black as the accent colour, replacing noble brown.
Highlander L and LE grades come standard with a second-row bench for seating for eight, while the XLE and Limited grades go with a standard Captain’s Chair second row for seven-seat capability. Buyers can choose a second-row bench for the XLE Gas, XLE Hybrid and Limited Gas grades.
The illuminated bronze door sills and unique floor and cargo mats embroidered with a special bronze-stitched logo complete the designer look. Tech features only enhance the Bronze Edition – thanks to two interior 120V/1,500-watt outlets, a hands-free power liftgate and rain-sensing wipers, to name a few. The Limited and Platinum variants provide passengers with ambient LED cabin lighting.
Furthermore, the 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid variants have improved their NVH levels and sound dampening. The Limited and Platinum variants feature acoustic glass on the front passenger windows to better insulate the vehicle from outside disturbances that filter into the cabin. So you are sure to have a noiseless ride.
Giving consideration to tech, the Highlander comes standard with dual 12.3-inch screens for the gauge cluster and infotainment display on Limited and Platinum trims. The gauge cluster comes with four different visual modes: Casual, Smart, Tough and Sporty.
