In almost all cars today, you’ll find a dashboard warning light that informs you of your vehicle’s performance. The dashboard lights tell you when something is wrong in the car. They also signal you when your vehicle needs some minor or serious maintenance. Once you notice any of these lights, it’s important to take immediate action before it develops into something severe.

However, there are some of the most important warning lights in your car that you should never ignore. They are;

  1. The Engine Temperature Warning Light

Once a red thermometer sign appears on your dashboard screen, it means that your car engine is overheating. If you do not immediately address the overheating issue, it could lead to your car going up in flames. The moment you recognize that the thermometer has gone red, quickly pack your car, call an auto mechanic or use some coolant to stabilize the temperature of your car engine.

  1. The Oil Pressure Warning Light

When you recognize a red oil spillage sign on the dashboard, it means that the oil in your car engine is not moving at the right pressure to keep your car running. Immediately you realize that the best solution is to turn your vehicle off and not use it until the issue has been fixed.

It might be inconvenient, but you should turn off the engine before it results in another issue. After that, some things to do include; checking the car’s oil level, calling for your car to be towed, and servicing your engine. However, only service the engine when you realize the pressure is not due to the low oil level in the car.

  1. The Battery Warning Light

Once you see your battery warning light coming on, it means that something is wrong and needs to be attended to urgently. It could either be your car battery is weak or a faulty alternator. It’s unsafe to keep driving when you realize this, as it could lead to more issues.

However, depending on the quality of your battery, you can drive with a battery warning light between 30 to 60 minutes before getting to the nearest auto mechanic.

How can you tell it’s the alternator, not the battery? If the engine turns on and goes off shortly, it means the alternator cannot charge the battery. The battery is dead if you start the car and it refuses to come on.

  1. The Check Engine Warning Light

A flashing check engine light means there’s a serious problem in the car that needs your attention. Many car owners dread seeing their check engine light come on. Some of the reasons your check engine light is coming on are; a loose or faulty gas cap, bad spark plugs, a faulty catalytic converter, or a dirty or faulty mass airflow sensor.

Is it okay to drive when your check engine warning light comes on? It’s best to stop driving to avoid increased issues. However, use your best judgment and determine if there’s a nearby auto mechanic to visit immediately or to call a towing van to tow your car to a mechanic shop.

Conclusion

The best practice for warning lights is to do something the moment you see them. They are warning lights for a reason. They are simply calling your attention to tackle an issue that has the potential to affect your car heavily.
