One thing that comes to mind when you think of Lagos is traffic. It’s tiring to know that the traffic situation in the state has not changed year after year. What does this leave Lagos residents with? It means finding ways always to stay ahead of traffic.

But, while Lagosians and Lagos residents know the ins and outs of avoiding traffic, how about those new to the state? In this article, we provide helpful tips on consistently beating the traffic situation in Lagos.

  1. Leave Early For Your Destination

Once you come into Lagos, you’ll realize something surprising. People living in the state have different sleeping/waking patterns from others in other states. So, waking and leaving early is essential to beat traffic.

It is even more important if your destination is far from where you’re staying. If you have an 8 am appointment, you should be on your way as early as 6:30 am. At first, you’ll struggle with adjusting your sleeping pattern, but it’ll be for a while.

  1. Download The Traffic App

Traffic apps are your next best friend when you’re staying in Lagos. There are traffic apps for Android and iOS to track the nature of traffic.

Some traffic apps to use in Lagos are;

  • Traffic Radio: It’s a community-based app that broadcasts information and reports on the nature of traffic in the state. It’s a free app that can be downloaded on the Google play store.
  • GidiTraffic: GidiTraffic is another app that provides traffic information, reports, and live feedback on your inquiries. It also gives user traffic reports in videos and photographs.
  • Traffikator: Traffikator gives users instant traffic information through crowdsourcing and geolocation. On this app, users can also connect and chat about the traffic situation.
  • Google Map: Google map comes in handy for many Lagosians. Before leaving your home, use the Google map to check the traffic situation where you’re going. If there’s hectic traffic, the traffic lanes will be red. When the road is free, it’ll show green.
  1. Use A Bike

The fastest and easiest way people in Lagos stay ahead of traffic is by using bikes. Bikes can penetrate through small paths to get you to your location faster than buses or cars.

Although bikes get expensive when there’s traffic, it’s still a better way to beat the traffic when you’re in traffic.

  1. Make Use Of Ferry Services

If you’re new to Lagos, it’ll interest you to know that ferry boats are another way to beat the traffic. If you’re staying around Ikorodu, instead of going through the traffic hassle on the mainland to get to the island, use the state-owned ferry service to commute to places like Ajah and CMS.

  1. Leave Your Workplace Late

It’s interesting how leaving for work early and coming back late is a way to beat the traffic. But, if you’re living and working in Lagos, those are some abnormalities you’ll get used to.

The roads are usually more accessible during the early morning hours and late hours at night. If you can, stay back at work until the traffic reduces.

Conclusion

Traffic is a significant challenge for anyone in Lagos and while beating it also takes a toll on you, it’s a pattern you’ll gradually learn once you’re in the state. Another traffic tip is to walk when you’re close to your destination instead of spending hours in traffic.
