There used to be a time when Korean cars were best avoided. Then it all changed, but even to this day, there are some Hyundais to stay away from.

Hyundai is a company I feel many people tend to overlook when they think about buying a car. Whilst they are not quite the biggest out there, they can make some brilliant cars. More often than not, Hyundai’s cars are incredibly affordable while offering brilliant reliability, and economic value, and being some of the safest cars out there.

I just find it odd that more people don’t seem to consider a Hyundai product. Having said that, not every car the company has produced has been a winner. There have been some rotten cars coming through the system.

This list contains five of the worst Hyundai cars to have been produced. These are five cars that we think you should simply avoid, especially if you are on a budget and don’t want to lose money.

2016 Hyundai Tucson

The Hyundai Tucson has not always been a terrible car. In fact, it has mostly been pretty good. It only started to have problems around 2015 and 2016. These were eventually traced down to the transmission and the AC, which led to over 200 complaints. There has even been an odd complaint about the current model of Tucson.

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

The Santa Fe is one of the most well-known cars in the Hyundai lineup, and it is still in production to this day. Not every model has had issues, but the 2017 version had too many problems for its own good. Transmission issues were rife, and the whole system was pretty hesitant.

2013 Hyundai Elantra

If you are thinking about purchasing a used Hyundai, by all means, go for the Elantra. But avoid the 2013 model year of the car. It turned out to have the second-highest number of complaints of any Hyundai model. Bizarre ticking noises would come from the engine, and those could eventually lead to rather major engine failures.

2011 Hyundai Sonata

The 2011 Sonata is another Hyundai that has been afflicted by all sorts of problems. It is one of the worst cars Hyundai has made. Engine issues again plagued the car, much like the Elantra, and over 2,700 complaints were made about the car. It cements its status as one of the worst cars the company has ever made.

2015 Hyundai Genesis

The current Genesis is actually one of the best cars in the Hyundai lineup. But the 2015 edition was not such a good car. Do not get this car if you are thinking about it. Electrical and battery issues were the main cause of concern with this car, and they never really improved before later models rolled off the production line.

Hyundai Cars Common Problems

Hyundai is a well-known manufacturer here in Nigeria, particularly for those looking for affordable but stylish vehicles. However, they certainly aren’t exempt from their issues. Despite honing its focus on safety and reliability, Hyundai is still seeing common reports of issues ranging from easy fixes to serious safety concerns. From problems with the engine to a concerning ABS issue that has triggered a number of recalls, here are some of the most common problems with Hyundai vehicles.

  • Engine Problems

The engine is the heart of the vehicle, and when it isn’t functioning properly, it can be frustrating and, in many cases, worrying. Hyundai vehicles are commonly reported as having engine problems, ranging from ticking or unusual noises to stalling, cutting out, or seizing. These issues appear to have affected the 2011 and 2012 Hyundai Sonata the most. Both the Sonata and Elantra are also prone to issues with the electrics within the vehicle, with the engine not turning over properly as a result. Any engine issues should be repaired as soon as possible to get you back on the road.

  • ABS Problems

Perhaps one of the most well-known but disturbing issues Hyundai vehicles have faced comes in the form of fires that start within the ABS system. An alarming number of vehicles are catching fire following liquid leaks and corrosion within the ABS system, usually caused by issues with seals. The issue saw a water leaking into the system, which caused the electrics to short out and cause a spark regardless of whether the car was on or off. Recalls have been submitted for the following vehicles:

Automatic Transmission Problems

Transmission failures can be costly, which is precisely why Hyundai’s problem with its automatic transmissions can be so frustrating to drivers. The 2016 Hyundai Tucson, in particular, is often reported with issues relating to the transmission, including problems with no acceleration following a stop or gear slippage while out on the road. Both issues can have dangerous consequences, so it’s important that any signs of issues with the gears and transmission are checked and resolved as soon as possible.
