When driving, I’m sure we all run into Nigerian police on the roads every day. Sometimes, on several occasions in a day. It is part of the Nigerian Police’s duty to carry out routine checks on the road. This also involves asking drivers for the necessary documents required to drive on the road in Nigeria. Not having these documents has consequences because it is not only illegal not to have them, but not having them could also subject you to harassment at the hands of corrupt law enforcement agents, who just want someone to prey on. To be free from harassment, it is important you have the necessary documents ready just in case you’re asked.

In this article, we will dive into 9 important car documents required by Nigerian police in 2024.

1. Driver’s License

This is unarguably the most important document you must have as a driver in Nigeria. It is non-negotiable. The driver’s license is one of the first documents required by the Nigerian police to show your eligibility to drive in Nigeria. Without it, you shouldn’t even enter the roads with a car. The driver’s license is definitely the most important document any driver must carry. It is official proof that the driver is legally permitted to drive a vehicle on Nigerian roads. Also, the driver’s license must be valid, and the driver must ensure that it is not expired. Driving without a valid license can result in fines or vehicle impoundment.

2. Certificate of Roadworthiness

A certificate of roadworthiness is an official document that shows that your vehicle is safe enough to be used on public roads. It is one of the essential documents required by the Nigerian police. Without this certificate, your vehicle would not be allowed on Nigerian roads because the certificate shows that your car is in good condition to be driven. This certificate is usually issued after a vehicle has passed the roadworthiness test that is conducted by the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO). The test checks the vehicle’s lights, brakes, tyres, and other important components that are needed for its operation.

3. Vehicle Registration Document

Your vehicle has to be registered with the appropriate state or federal authorities in Nigeria. The vehicle registration documents show that your vehicle has been registered. It is one of the most important documents that is required by the Nigerian police and must be presented upon request. The registration documents typically include details like the vehicle’s make, model, year of manufacture, and the name of the registered owner. You’ll receive a vehicle registration certificate after successful registration.

4. Proof of Ownership Document

The car is yours? How do you prove that? The proof of ownership document gives evidence that you are the legal owner of the vehicle. It is a document that is essential, and it’s required by Nigerian police. It is important as it shows that the person driving the car is either the owner of the car or is authorized to use the car. Without it, the car could be called stolen. This document is mostly important in situations where there is a dispute over the ownership of the vehicle. The proof of ownership document usually contains the name of the vehicle owner, the vehicle’s details, and any previous owners.

5. Vehicle License/ Road Tax

The vehicle license is often referred to as a road tax. This document is one of the most important car documents that the Nigerian police would always request. It is required for all sorts of vehicles as long as they are operating on Nigerian roads. This license must be renewed annually and serves as proof that the vehicle owner has paid the necessary taxes to keep the vehicle on the road. The vehicle license is typically displayed on the vehicle’s windscreen. Some states require road tax stickers or decals to be displayed on the vehicle. If you’re going for a drive, ensure that you have the necessary stickers if your state requires them.

6. Vehicle Insurance Certificate

In Nigeria, we usually overlook the importance of insurance generally. Having vehicle insurance is not just a legal requirement for owning a car; it is also definitely a good practice everyone should adopt. The insurance certificate proves that a vehicle has been insured against third-party damages. The most basic level of insurance that is required is third-party insurance, which covers damage to other vehicles in the event of an accident, but it is advisable to have comprehensive coverage. A valid vehicle insurance is mandatory, and the absence of an insurance certificate might lead to penalties.

7. Tint Permit Document (if applicable)

If you are someone who loves and wants a tinted window for a car, then you should get a tint permit. All cars in Nigeria with a tinted window are required to have a tint permit. This permit is issued by the Nigerian police, and it is a mandatory document for all cars with tinted windows. The absence of a tint permit when required can lead to a vehicle being impounded.

8. Hackney Permit (For Commercial Vehicles)

If you plan to use your vehicle for commercial use, one of the most important documents that would be required of you by the Nigerian police is your hackney permit. All commercial cars must have it. This permit authorizes the vehicle to be used for commercial purposes, such as transporting goods or passengers for a fee. The hackney permit is usually renewed every year and is subject to inspection by the authorities.

9. Certificate of Incorporation (for Company Vehicles)

If you are driving a vehicle that is owned by a company, you have to always carry the company’s certificate of incorporation. The certificate of incorporation shows that the company is a legal company and the company is the registered owner of the vehicle. This document is not one of the essential documents that Nigerian police would always ask for when the car is a company car.

Consequences of not having these documents

  • You could be given a fine.
  • You could be summoned to the court.
  • Vehicle impoundment.
  • In severe cases, the driver could be arrested.

Conclusion

To avoid being embarrassed by the Nigerian police being given a fine or your vehicle impounded, always ensure you carry all these documents while driving. Always check that the documents are the original or verified copies. It is, however, important to keep copies of these documents in a safe place as a reference in case they get lost. It is important to carry the correct and updated documents; it shows you’re fulfilling your legal obligation to the country, and it is a symbol of responsible driving. It helps you avoid unnecessary run-ins with the law, and it creates a safe driving environment for everyone.
