Nigerians have taken a preference to buy used/second-hand vehicles over brand-new cars. This is mostly because used cars are more affordable for the majority of Nigerians. Used cars are cheaper than brand-new cars, hence, the majority of the cars on Nigerian roads are used. However, a challenge with used cars is that there are certain problems they are more likely to have. So in case, you intend to buy a used vehicle anytime soon or in the future, it’s important you bear in mind these common problems associated with second-hand cars:

  1. Clutch issues

Most Nigerian drivers complain of issues with their clutch. This challenge is often common with used cars. As for mileage increases, slipping and burnt-out clutches tend to occur.

  1. Poor battery

Batteries generally lose their effectiveness within 3-5 years. The batteries in a used vehicle are often not dependable. Depending on how old the vehicle is, if the vehicle is more than 5 years old, you will definitely experience battery issues. It is usually advisable to change the battery of a used car.

  1. Electrical issues

Modern cars have more electric components than older cars. These components can suffer damages that affect their proper functioning.

  1. Malfunctioning starter motor

Due to changes in the environment and other factors, the starter motor can start functioning, especially if it is a foreign used car.

  1. Brake issues

Having a healthy, functioning brake is an important feature of a car. There have been many reported cases of accidents on Nigerian roads due to brake failure. Brake issues are a common problem used/second-hand vehicles are prone to.

  1. Flat or damaged tires and wheels

Flat tires are a common problem with used cars. Harsh conditions and sudden impacts can damage the wheels which will lead to the wearing away of some of the parts. This can also raise the challenges of wheel misalignment

  1. Cylinder head gasket failure

Coolant leaks and white smoke are often seen in second-hand vehicles. These two issues are signs of damage to the cylinder head gasket, and this commonly happens in second-hand vehicles.

  1. Issues with the AC

Considering the hot weather conditions of Nigeria, having an AC fitted and working in your car is a necessity. However, while most modern new cars come with AC as standard, the challenge is that most second-hand cars have damaged AC. To solve this problem, buying a new condenser can solve the issue, otherwise, consult with a mechanic.

  1. Fuel problems

In most cases, owners of second-hand vehicles complain of their vehicles consuming too much fuel. This is due to various reasons which could be either of or a combination of leaky pipes, faulty fuel pumps, damaged injector etc.

  1. Damaged window regulator/motor

Old cars require you to wind down your windows by hand. However, modern cars make use of a button or a window regulator to wind up/down your windows. Unfortunately, in most used cars, this regulator is damaged or not functioning properly.

  1. Transmission issues

Second-hand vehicles are more likely to have transmission issues. Common symptoms of transmission problems in a car include trouble shifting gears, making grinding noises, or leaking transmission fluid etc.

Understanding Tokunbo And Foreign Used Cars
  1. Turbo issues

Drivers interested in more power and performance will preferably opt for vehicles with turbo options. There have been reported cases of turbo issues with many used vehicles. Before paying and driving off in a used car, ensure to have your mechanic do a test drive and inspect it for you.

  1. Damaged Spark plug

A spark plug is a vital component of the ignition system of a car. Ideàlly, spark plugs should be replaced every 10,000 miles. In most used cars, the spark plug is not working well. Therefore, it’s best you get a new spark plug if you would be buying a second-hand car.

  1. Rust

If a vehicle is properly maintained, there should not be a build-up of rust on the metallic parts of the vehicle. However, in most used vehicles, particularly locally used ones, you are more likely to find rust on different parts of the vehicle.

CONCLUSION

Buying second-hand or used vehicles is a good way to save some cash on owning a car. However, if these problems listed above are overlooked, you might find yourself spending more on repair and maintenance.
