Even the best vehicles there have their problems. While the Sequoia tries to avoid as many mechanical problems as possible, it is still one of the SUVs with some of its problems.

Recently, Toyota seems to recall the Toyota Sequoia because of some of these problems.

Here are some of the common problems the Toyota Sequoia has.

  1. Sequoia Oxygen Sensor Failure

According to Repair Pal, users reported a failing oxygen sensor as the next most common Toyota Sequoia problem. According to hundreds of real owners, one or more oxygen sensors may fail, which results in an illuminated check engine light. Repair Pal says only six model years are affected, the 2001 through 2005 models and the 2008 Sequoia.

In 2023, these models will have an average of 155,377 miles on the odometer. As a result, most consumers will not be looking to purchase one, but current owners might run into these issues. Oxygen replacement costs a lot of money for a single unit. However, multiple can fail, multiplying that cost by the number of failing sensors. Over 70 people reported the same problem to RP.

  1. Cracked And Leaking Exhaust Manifold

The next most common problem with the Toyota Sequoia is a damaged exhaust manifold. According to owners, they first hear a ticking noise in the engine while driving. Upon investigation, it’s being caused by a cracked exhaust manifold, which then causes leaks.

As a result, the longer it goes unrepaired, the more problems it may cause. If you’re hearing ticking from the engine, it’s best to check it out immediately. On average, owners experienced this problem at around 116,000 miles. It’s also only been reported for the 2001-2007 model years and the 2012 model.

Exhaust manifold replacement can cost anywhere from $1,148 to $1,373. Allowing it to leak for an extended time is dangerous, so repair it as quickly as possible. Over 50 people have reported this problem to Repair Pal.

  1. Ball Joint Issues

According to Repair Pal, the most common Toyota Sequoia problem is also a lower ball joint issue. Reportedly, Toyota has recalled many of the Sequoia that has these issues and spans eight different model years. It’s been noted that the automaker will replace the ball joints under recall; it will be a free repair for everyone.

Is The Toyota Sequoia A Good SUV?

Overall, the Toyota Sequoia is a good SUV. Many of its most common problems are only present in older model years. Starting with the 2001 model year through roughly 2008, most of the issues occur. Owners have not reported nearly as many issues with more recent model years.

Reasons Why I Should Buy Toyota Sequoia

There are several reasons why you may want to consider purchasing a Toyota Sequoia:

  1. Space and Comfort: The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV that can comfortably seat up to eight passengers. This makes it a great choice for families or anyone who needs a lot of space for passengers and cargo.
  2. Performance: The Sequoia is powered by a V8 engine that provides plenty of power and towing capability. It also comes with a smooth-shifting 6-speed automatic transmission.
  3. Reliability: Toyota is known for building vehicles that are reliable and long-lasting. The Sequoia is no exception and has a reputation for being a dependable SUV.
  4. Safety Features: The Sequoia comes with a variety of standard safety features, including a rearview camera, lane departure warning, and a stability control system.
  5. Off-Road Capability: The Sequoia is available with a TRD off-road package which includes features such as all-terrain tires, a locking rear differential, and skid plates. This makes it a great option for those who plan to take their vehicle off-road.
  6. Resale value: Toyota Sequoia has a good reputation for holding its resale value over in most counties but in Nigeria, its resale value is very poor as most people won’t buy Nigeria used.
  7. Warranty: Toyota offers a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, and a 5-year/unlimited-mile corrosion warranty.
  8. Tech Features: The Sequoia offers a variety of features to keep you and your passengers entertained, such as a touchscreen infotainment system, an available rear-seat entertainment system, and smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Other Top Problems of Toyota Sequoia

The Toyota Sequoia is generally considered to be a reliable SUV, however, like any vehicle, it may have some issues. Here are a few problems that have been reported by Toyota Sequoia owners:

  1. Transmission problems: Some owners have reported issues with the transmission, such as slipping or delayed shifting.
  2. Suspension problems: Some owners have reported issues with the suspension, such as worn bushings or clunking noises.
  3. Oil consumption: Some owners have reported that their Sequoia uses excessive amounts of oil between oil changes.
  4. Check Engine Light: Some owners have reported issues with the check engine light coming on, which can be caused by a variety of issues such as the oxygen sensor or catalytic converter.
  5. Brake issues: Some owners have reported issues with the braking system, such as squeaking or grinding noises or poor braking performance.
  6. Fuel pump problems: Some owners have reported issues with the fuel pump, which can cause the engine to stall or not start.
  7. Timing Chain Tensioner: Some owners have reported issues with timing chain tensioner failure and the engine will not start.

It’s important to keep in mind that these issues may not affect all Toyota Sequoia models, or even all models of the same year or trim level. It’s always a good idea to check the reliability ratings and owner reviews of a specific model and year before making a purchase.
