Have you ever realised that after a car accident, the hazard light of that vehicle automatically comes on? If so, what is the reason behind the hazard light coming on?

If you are wondering what the hazard light is and what it looks like when it comes on, then check out this video that shows the moment a BMW car accident happened and the vehicle’s hazard light immediately came on.

The video which was shared on @supercarsofnigeria was wondering why the hazard light comes on after an accident; here are some of the reasons social media users pointed out lead to vehicle hazard lights coming on.

A car dealer stated: “The Hazard light comes on when the car senses that the driver is werey. You see the light blinking werey werey werey.”

Another social media user said: “The hazard light comes on indicating the airbags been activated or deflated.” The users also noted that “it also comes on when emergency brakes occur so the car behind can also be careful as this mostly happens on moden models for safety purposes.”

Some other users said: “Emergency braking triggers the hazard lights in most modern cars to alert other drivers of a potential danger. Same applies to a crash.”

Now Why Does the Hazard Light Come On Automatically After A Car Accident?

The hazard lights, also known as the emergency flashers or hazard warning lights, are designed to alert other drivers to a potential hazard or emergency situation. When a car is involved in an accident, the impact or damage can trigger various safety mechanisms in the vehicle, including the automatic activation of the hazard lights. There are several reasons why this happens:

  • Safety precaution: The automatic activation of the hazard lights is a safety feature designed to increase the visibility of the vehicle involved in an accident. By quickly alerting other drivers to the potential danger ahead, it helps prevent further accidents or collisions.
  • Warning to other drivers: Hazard lights indicate that there is a problem or hazard on the road, such as a disabled vehicle or an accident scene. It signals to other drivers to exercise caution and be prepared to take appropriate action, such as changing lanes or slowing down.
  • Communication with emergency services: In some cases, the automatic activation of the hazard lights can be linked to other systems that communicate with emergency services. This can help emergency responders locate the accident scene more quickly and provide assistance.
