When it comes to hyper luxury cars, Bugatti is in a class of its own entirely. Not only are Bugatti vehicles sound in seven figures in dollars (and eight figures in Naira), but what it takes to maintain this luxury vehicle is enough to purchase the 2024 Toyota Corolla with some change!

But, that’s not all. We recently found out exactly how long it takes Bugatti to paint one of its cars, and the findings are indeed shocking. Well, when you look into the craftsmanship that goes into these vehicles, that would explain why Bugatti cars are so expensive and always have only a few units.

In a press release from early this year, Bugatti shared a rundown of their detailed process of painting their cars. According to the French auto brand, it takes hundreds of hours to paint one Bugatti car (approximately what it will take a regular car brand to paint 4-5 cars).

Why? No machines or robots are involved in the Bugatti car-painting process. Every painting is done by expert human painters who pay detailed attention to fish out any imperfection during the process.

The painters start by applying two layers of primers with detailed sand in between. This preparation takes 100 hours alone and even at this point, the surfaces are not yet ready to be painted.

Following through is a seemingly endless process of more clear coating, sanding and a repeated process of that until the perfect finish is gotten. Bugatti describes this as “a labour of love, never rushed but always carefully applied and devotedly polished.”

The painting specialist can only move to the next stage when all the car’s panels have perfect surfaces. Before that, the team analyzes each panel carefully. They do this because Bugatti uses several different material types across the body, each with its painting characteristics.

In any case, if they realize a slight difference in the shades in the painting process, the vehicle will repainted until it has one unifying shade.

When the car has gotten to the spraying stage, and has been completed, it’s given four more days for it to be properly polished to perfection. Bugatti notes that theirs is the most complex polishing process in the entire auto industry.
