We’ve heard grace to grass stories, but few of these stories stand out, amongst them is the story of a one-time popular Lagos socialite and billionaire who once owned several fleets of luxurious cars like the Lamborghini, Ferrari, a Bugatti and many more in his garage in the early 90s.

He was Once a revered figure in the Nigerian elite circles, who enjoyed the adoration of musicians and Lagos’ high society for his generosity and affluent lifestyle. Many popular singers of the 90s sang their praises to the high heavens.

The story of Goddy Anabor

At the height of his fame and wealth, Goddy Anabor, the publisher of now-rested Hearts Magazine, was the toast of musicians and Lagos big babes because of his generosity of heart and his large pocket.

Goddy, who is now a taxi driver on the streets of Lagos, allegedly made money from Yahoo, known as 419 at the time. When asked about his fraud background and how he made money “Goddy waxed philosophically that Yahoo is not a crime; rather, he collected from those who stole from his ancestors.”,

Businesses he invested

He invested the money by starting different businesses, including the

  • 1) The Heart Magazine, a romance soft-sell publication that gave the defunct Hints Magazine a big run for its money
  • 2) Goddy Anabor founded a colour printing business that printed for the This Day newspaper, the Punch newspaper, and many other media publications.
  • 3) He also had a security company and was among the pioneers, even though security guard companies have not become mainstream.
  • 4) He was a big player in the real estate business in Lagos with over 100 buildings to his name.

But beyond all these companies, Goddy was rich in every word of them. He once confessed that he had 3 billion naira at Equity Bank in 1990. 3 billion naira of those in that era are equivalent to 70 billion today. That was how rich he was. He was the only Nigerian socialite in that era who had foreign ambassadors posted to Nigeria attending his wild parties. Nigerian women, especially Lagos’ big babies, who are today our mothers and grandmothers, loved him.

Car dealers also loved him. He drove luxury cars and was always among the first to drive a new Rolls-Royce in Nigeria whenever the manufacturer released it. He had up to 59 cars in his garage, which included Bentleys, Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Bugattis, and Rolls-Royces.

Today, Gody, who is 62 years old, can only reminisce about the good old days. All he has now are memories of the lavish life he once lived and the women he once knew. He is now a shadow of his former self, driving a taxi on the streets of Lagos to pay his bills. His hangers-on, psycho girlfriends, side chicks, and even the men he helped lift out of poverty have all abandoned him to his poverty, except for one called Mike Biggy, who lives in the Akowonjo area of Lagos. Mike Biggy rented a house for Gody and helped with some of his bills. Gody used to own properties on GRA and Alen Avenue, including many guest houses.

However, all his properties have been sold off at very low prices because his friends knew he was broke and took advantage of his situation. Gody also had a drug addiction problem, leading him to sell his properties at below market prices to feed his addiction. His wife, Antonia, who was a party animal, also abandoned him, moving with the kids abroad.

It seems her attraction was solely based on Gody’s money, and when it ran out, she vanished with the kids to the United Kingdom, leaving Gody behind. Gody alleges that his wife colluded with the managers of his businesses to cheat him before fleeing to the UK when the money ran out. Gody’s story is a lesson for everyone. Easy come, easy go; short-term solutions and pleasures do not last. All that money ended up going down the drain, and fraud does not pay. It was easy for Gody to lose everything because he did not work hard for it. This tragic “rags to riches to rags” story serves as an eye-opener and a lesson for everyone.
