Some people are more acquainted with believing that there can be nothing more comfortable and luxurious than travelling in their privately owned vehicles, using public transportation services can certainly be worth a try and very adventurous.

There are many ways to get around Nigeria. While you have the option to choose your means of transportation based on your preferences, conveniences, requirements, and affordability, some of the most common and affordable ones are Taxis, Buses, Motorcycles, Tricycles, and Ride-hailing services(Uber, bolt, and in-drive).

For visitors places like Lagos, Benin City, and Onitsha can seem chaotic because of traffic but are surprisingly efficient, It may look chaotic, but it doesn’t take long to get used to the traffic in Nigeria. First-timers often need to adjust to the system.

Experienced and reputed transportation systems have the efficiency to provide wonderful services to their passengers and cater perfectly to all their travel needs.

The level of comfort and convenience you will experience is tied to the transportation service you choose.

Whichever option you choose, here’s a guide to getting around Nigeria like a pro.

  • Use Okada (motorcycle taxi) for a short journey

okada (motorcycle taxi; known as Achaba in the north) is one of the cheapest means of transportation to help you get to your destination very fast and help you skip Nigeria traffic. Motorcycle taxis are found Mostly everywhere, usually at dedicated spots on neighbourhood streets and main roads.

Some states, like Kaduna, Akwa Ibom, Kano, Rivers, Lagos Enugu, and the Federal Capital Territory, have banned them outright but you can find rural communities.

  • Take Keke (tricycle)

In numerous Nigerian urban areas, kekes (tricycles) supplement okadas in moving occupants around. More secure and more fun than an okada, kekes are great for short rides that last not exactly 30 minutes.

Where okadas have been prohibited, like private estates and gated residencies, kekes are the main other option.

  • Need a private ride book an Uber or both

Ride-hailing like Uber, bolt, and in-drive are widely known and used in Nigeria. Ride-hailing services work by connecting passengers with drivers through a smartphone app. You only need to request a ride via the app, by specifying your location and destination. The app provides information about the driver, estimated time of arrival, and its cost, and payment is usually made electronically through the app.

  • For interstate -travels that bus, train, or flight

Beyond the confines of where you are, there are transportation networks with vast expanses of the countryside. Buses, trains, and flights are ideal for interstate travel due to their efficiency, convenience, and accessibility. They are quick and reliable means of transportation, allowing you to cover long distances comfortably while experiencing the diverse landscapes and cultures of different regions.
