Car dealers seem to be honest with you about their cars, but there are still many secrets to selling used cars in Nigeria that they won’t tell you. This is where playing dubiously smart is considered a business. We aren’t necessarily saying that it’s right to share your trade secrets. It is very wrong for a business owner to withhold important information that the customer has the right to know about the upcoming transaction.

The Nigerian car dealer is one of the main sources of this problem when it comes to business. They will never give you some important information unless you ask for it.

A good car dealer will give you all the information you need to know even when you don’t ask. These questions usually don’t work, only to realize later that you were cheated in some way. The only exception to these questions is when buying a new car. So what are these key questions when buying a car from a car dealer?

The reason why the car is for sale

A car for sale is very important to the buyer. The answer to this question is very important when buying a used car from anyone.

A car that consumes fuel abnormally and imagine you want to buy a such car, it will run your pocket dry. For example, a used 2010 Toyota Camry sells for N700,000. You are very suspicious and have to find an answer as to why the owner is selling the car. Instead of wondering why the car is being sold so cheaply, consider why it is being sold at all.

If the owner is selling because they need money to process a visa or need money to buy another car, it makes sense. We don’t think you should buy the car if the owner won’t tell you why they are selling it to you.

Was the car repaired before it was put up for sale?

If it’s a tokunbo always request a list of repairs that have been made since it was shipped to Nigeria. Car dealers are notorious for taking their cars for sale to various garages for temporary repairs so that the buyer does not realize there is something wrong with it.

When buying luxury car brands like Audi, BMW, Bentley, Mercedes-Benz, etc., You will have to doubt that Nigerians have a good maintenance culture for these luxury cars. So imagine you are buying a 2015 Nigerian BMW 7 Series second-hand from a Nigerian who is an average earner who got the car as a gift. It is possible that maintenance has not been done properly.

What are the features of the previous owner’s car?

For example, since the Okada and Keke were banned in Lagos, we’ve seen more regular sedans and minivans like the Sienna used for shuttle services.

  • What will cars look like in the future?

Commuter cars are already commercial vehicles and spend most of their time on the road. Siennas are common cars for transport in Nigeria. The wear and tear on such cars are always higher than on private cars. Second, when a 2003 Toyota Sienna comes up for sale, you would normally assume that the car was a family car owned by the previous owner.

This is a very false assumption, as it is most likely a commercial vehicle. Commercial vehicles are said to be cheaper than private cars, and commercial vehicles are at a higher risk of bugs on a regular basis. In addition, commercial vehicles have a low value as used vehicles because many people use them for a long period of time.

Does the car have a criminal record?

That’s a very difficult answer to find, but it’s easy to tell if the car is a Tokunbo car, not through a car salesman anyway. However, it is very important when buying very expensive vehicles such as luxury cars or supercars.

If you ask someone who sells a straight-faced car if they have a criminal record, they might give you an honest answer. To find out if Tokumbo has a criminal record, simply check the car’s history with a VIN checker.

Did the car have a salvage title?

There is a set procedure to follow when searching for a salvage car in Nigeria. The junk car business is booming in Nigeria right now, but many are going in the wrong direction.

We can all agree at this time: it’s not a crime to buy or sell a properly repaired salvaged car, as long as the buyer is aware of the previous owner of the salvaged vehicle.

Always ask the car salesman, especially for Tokunbo cars, if the car was previously crashed and repaired. Salvage cars are said to be cheap on the market, so we need to answer this question so as not to pay too much for the car we buy. Some cars have open issues that you should know about before you buy them. Some even sell their cars because they don’t know how to fix the problem.

What are the aftermarket parts for this car?

There are some cars that have engines and parts from other cars because the owner felt the need for them. In Nigeria, you can find Nissan cars with BMW engines or engine parts.

You should ask your car salesman for all the aftermarket parts and mods to make the car easily identifiable by the eye. something no one can see. This information is only needed if a problem occurs. It makes it easier to track down the cause of the problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy a car with a salvage title?

The answer is Yes. Salvage cars aren’t usually bad in some ways. But as a buyer, you must be deeply in the know of what actually happened to the car and the repairs that are done on it, so as not to be caught unaware of the unknown when driving in future.

Should I buy a car without test driving?

Test driving is mostly important if you are buying a tokunbo car, to check if you’re in any problems wrong with it before buying. That is why your driving is very important. But if you are buying a new car, you may forgo this process.

Conclusion

Always ask these questions between calls so the car dealer doesn’t know what you’re really going to do. Anytime you want to buy a car, all these answers are helpful enough. Buying a used car is not always ABC, so be really prepared before venturing to do so.
