The Nigerian car market is the best place to find the best deals on used cars of all types. Whether you’re looking for Tokunbo or Nigerian-used, you’ll find them readily available in the market today.

However, when buying a used car in the market today, there are certain things you should be aware of. One of them is the age of the vehicle and mileage. After a certain mileage, most cars are considered too old to last long.

So, when buying a used car in the Nigerian car market, consider the mileage of the vehicle and age before making your purchase.

So, what mileage is acceptable for used cars?

Acceptable Mileage for Used Cars

When buying a used car, there’s no generally acceptable mileage. However, it’ll be best to stick to a vehicle with lower mileage. Lower is better.

In every car, the average mileage of a car per year is 12,000 miles. As such, a 10-year-old car should have roughly 120,000 miles on the odometer. You can use these numbers to determine if the car you’re looking to buy is considered to have high mileage or low mileage for the age of the vehicle.

Note that the fewer miles that a car has been driven, the better. If you can find used cars with fewer than the average miles on most used cars, it will be best.

Here are some best-used cars to purchase in Nigeria today:

  1. The 2005 – 2017 Toyota Corolla (N5 -N15 Million)

This probably doesn’t come as a surprise to you. Toyota, until today, has enjoyed a large number of loyal customers in Nigeria alone. Apart from the Camry, the Corolla is one of their main flagship models. Toyota Corolla is a popular one in Nigeria and it has been for as long as one can remember.

This car, like the Camry, is a combo of great performance, sleekness, and affordability. If you are looking for the best-used Toyota Corolla cars to buy in Nigeria today, it had better be between the 2005 and 2017 models as they are slightly affordable compared to the latest models.

  1. The 2003 – 2018 Toyota Camry (N3.5 – 17 Million)

Toyota Camry is, without a doubt, one of the most popular models in Nigeria. As a matter of fact, there’s hardly a day that you wouldn’t find a Toyota Camry, even on a less busy road.

The affordability, performance, maintenance cost, and fuel economy that it possesses are what make it a highly purchased vehicle in Nigeria. Also, the 2003 to 2018 Toyota Camry falls well within the category of best-used Camry to purchase in Nigeria today.

  1. The 2007 – 2016 Honda Accord (N3 – 15 Million)

Honda is a popular auto brand all over the world and in Nigeria. A lot of Honda car models are well purchased here in Nigeria but none is as highly purchased as the Honda Accord.

Honda Accord could easily be in contention for the most popular vehicle with the likes of the next two cars on this list. However, its high maintenance cost is one reason why it isn’t as purchased as those cars.

If you want to get the best experience of a used Honda vehicle, then your target should be the 2007 to 2016 models. They are not just some of the best Honda models but are more affordable and worth their price.

  1. 2008 – 2017 Kia Rio (N2.5 – 12 Million)

Although they might have been around for quite a while, they are still relatively new in the Nigerian auto market. However, Kia Rio has quickly gained popularity since its first introduction into the Nigerian auto market.

It is a compact-looking vehicle, cheap and strong. So, of course, a lot of Nigerians are attracted to it.

  1. The 2002 – 2017 Volkswagen Golf (N3.5 – 12 Million)

There was a time when most of the VW Golfs you would find around were only used as taxis. Not anymore. Since VW Golf could creep into the Nigerian auto market and gain enough popularity, bringing in the more sophisticated and beautiful models was easy. It was just a case of “Oh! That’s nice Golf. I didn’t know there were such nice Golf cars.

  1. The 2001 – 2018 Toyota Sienna (N4 – N25 Million)

Quite a number of good things are packed up in this minivan actually. In fact, this is without a doubt the most popular minivan in Nigeria today. The spaciousness of the minivan is a big advantage to it. Big space means it passes as a luxurious mass transit vehicle, a family vehicle, and a cargo vehicle. The versatility of the Toyota Sienna is one of the reasons it makes it on our list of most of our purchased cars for 2019 in Nigeria. In addition, the fact that it is so common simply goes to show that it is quite affordable for all.

  1. The 2005 – 2016 Lexus RX350 (N5 – 24 Million)

As you might already know, Lexus is the luxury brand of Toyota, and this mini SUV is just a perfect example of luxury. Not only is it for the rich but also for the middle-class citizens. This mini SUV has a wider customer base as the elite aren’t as many as middle-class citizens.

It’s no wonder RX 350 is among the most purchased vehicles in the country today. Anyone who owns the 2005 to 2016 Lexus RX350 finds it to be one of their best car purchases ever!

Conclusion

Looking for the best-used cars in the Nigerian market today? These are the vehicles and the model years to go after. What makes these model years stand out is not just the price, but the fact that the majority of them are equipped with some of the features you’ll still find in the latest models. So, if you can’t go for newer models, any vehicle within these year categories is a great purchase.
