Luxury cars are incomplete without the option to slide down your roof completely to receive fresh air as you drive. This is where convertible cars come into play. A convertible, also known as a Cabriolet, is a passenger car that can be driven without a car roof. The way the roofs are retracted and stored varies between different convertible models. The most exciting thing about convertibles is that they allow for an open-air driving experience with the option of covering the hood back in unfavourable conditions.
The M440i is fitted with a manual wind deflector to quiet turbulence in the cabin, which is a common feature in most 4-seat convertibles. The deflector comes with its cargo bag to store in the cabin. While it’s simple to fit and certainly works as designed, in practice, it’s a bit of a chore to install. Therefore, most drivers either leave it in place or rarely fit the device at all. A permanent, powered wind deflector for a 4-seat convertible remains one of engineering’s holy grails.
BMW’s entry-luxury coupe and convertible have undergone a few changes for 2023. However, M Sport brakes with red or blue callipers are now a part of the optional Shadowline appearance package. The Premium package no longer includes BMW’s gimmicky gesture controls for the infotainment system, and the optional head-up display is now only available on top-spec M440i models. A Parking Assistance package has been added to the options sheet, and all models now come with a faux leather dashboard cover.
From the driver’s seat, there’s little that differentiates the 2023 BMW 4-series from the 3-series sedan on which it’s based, and that’s a good thing. However, on the outside, the two-door body style and oversized twin-kidney grille give the 4-series a look entirely different from its four-door, 3-series counterpart. Practicality takes a back seat here, literally, as the 4-series’ rear seat is snug. Also, its trunk is not as spacious as the 3-series’ cargo hold. But anyone who cares about practicality can opt for the 3-series sedan.
