In Nigeria, it is considered illegal and criminal to drive without owning a driver’s license. A driver’s license is a legal document issued by the Federal Road Safety Commission(FRSC) that confers the right to drive to an individual. Anyone older than 18 years old is eligible to obtain a driver’s license in Nigeria.

However, age is not the only requirement an individual must tick before he can be issued a driver’s license in Nigeria. There are steps to follow, as well as other necessary requirements. Also, obtaining this license is not free, it costs some money and the validity can be either 3 years or 5 years.

Required Documents To Get A Driver’s Licence In Nigeria

Unless your documents are complete, you won’t be issued a driver’s license in Nigeria. Below is a list of the required documents:

  • Driving school certificate
  • Learner’s permit
  • VIO Test certificate
  • Birth certificate/Age declaration.
  • Eye Test certificate from FRSC approved clinics.
  • Evidence of driver’s permit payment (bank teller or printout).
  • National Identification Number

How To Get a Driver License In Nigeria:

If you are obtaining a driver’s license for the first time in Nigeria, these steps will be of help to get it done fast without delay and harassment;

  • Attend training at an accredited driving school.
  • Your driving school will then present you to the Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) for a driving test.
  • Once you pass the driving test, you will be given a certificate of proficiency from the VIO.
  • Complete the driver’s licence application form at the Drivers Licencing Centre (DLC) or apply online via https://www.nigeriadriverslicence.org/
  • Pay the licence fee online or at the Bank.
  • If you applied online, print your acknowledgement slip once the payment is verified.
  • Present your application form/slip to the Board of Internal Revenue (BIR) Officer and VIO at the DLC for endorsement.
  • Proceed to the FRSC Officer at the DLC for biometric data capture.
  • Obtain a temporary driver’s licence valid for 60 days.
  • Pick up the original driver’s licence at the BIR Office after 60 days.

As stated above, this application form can be filled out online or at the Driver’s License Centre (DLC). This form contains basic information about you, your background, health status and the number of years of Driver’s license you want. The form is simple to pick, but you need to write/type carefully so that you don’t make mistakes. Before submitting, it’s okay that you cross-check your responses.   • Title: (Mr/Mrs/Miss) Surname
  • First name
  • Other names
  • Sex: Male/ Female
  • Date of birth (DD/MM/YY)
  • Place of birth (City/ Town)
  • Marital status
  • Nationality
  • Address information (House/ Flat/ Plot number), Street
  • State of origin
  • Local Govt of Origin
  • Phone number(s)
  • Occupation
  • Mother maiden name
  • Height
  • Blood group
  • Phone number of next of kin
  • Nationality of next of kin
  • Years of application: 3 years or 5 years…

How Much Does It Cost For A New Driving Licence Application?

Following are the latest fees for new driving license applications in Nigeria this 2021;

  • Certificate of driving school: 8,000 NGN or more depending on driving school.
  • Certificate of VIO test: 1,000 NGN
  • Certificate of eye test: 500 NGN

Driver’s licence payment: According to FRSC Nigeria, it is 12,000NGN for 3 years or 15,000 NGN for 5 years. It was formally 6,350 and 10,450 NGN for 3 and 5 years respectively.

  • Click on the DL Application
  • If your driver’s license is expired, click on “Renewal” from the drop-down.
  • While it’s still valid, click “Re-issue driver’s license”.
  • Supply Driver’s License Number and Date of Birth in the dialogue box that opens
  • Click on search
  • Click OK from the pop-up box, after confirming the Drivers License number to be correct

How To Renew Your Drivers License In Nigeria

A driving license expires after three or five years depending on what you applied for initially. If your licence has expired, quickly have it renewed by following these simple steps;

  • Log on to the FRSC website at https://www.nigeriadriverslicence.org/
  • Click on ‘DL Application’ and select ‘Renew Driver’s license’ from the drop-down menu.
  • Enter your driver’s license number and date of birth to pull out existing Demographic Information about you.
  • Make a payment online and print your receipt.
  • Present your receipt and acknowledgement form to the nearest Drivers Licensing Centre.
  • Obtain a temporary driver’s licence valid for 60 days.
  • Pick up the original driver’s licence at the BIR Office after 60 days.
