Could the solution to the increase in the price of fuel in Nigeria be the rise of hybrid and electric cars in the country? This has been the question in the mouths and minds of many Nigerians since the removal of the fuel subsidy.

However, there have been many who have countered these thoughts, with the reason being that Nigeria does not have enough structures in place to support electric cars.

While the argument could be justifiable for electric cars, the same cannot be exactly said concerning hybrid cars. For Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles, it gives car owners and drivers an opportunity to subsidize the amount of fuel their vehicles consume.

Drivers have the option of using the electric mode of the vehicle and switching to the gas-powered mode when they want to.

Many Nigerians might not see electric cars as the future in the country, considering factors like how expensive they are and charging station issues in the country. However, it can be said that over a couple of years, Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles are going to take over the face of driving in Nigeria.

There’s no certainty the price of fuel will go down in the country ever again. Except the country’s economy magically gets better in a few years. What many Nigerians are likely to do is shift towards hybrid vehicles.

But with the economic situation in the country, there’s the possibility only the wealthy could find this a suitable option for cushioning the cost of fuel. Why? Because affording a hybrid vehicle for the average Nigerian requires the investment of a lot of money they probably don’t have.

But, the reality is that the removal of fuel subsidies in the country has already shape-shifted the future of cars and driving in the country. If Nigerians are lucky, this could become the time investors would troop in to invest in charging stations, which will, in turn, increase the popularity of electric vehicles in the country.
