John Michael Nchekwube Obinna Obi, professionally known as John Mikel Obi is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as a defensive Midfielder for Stoke City. Mikel Obi was born on the 22nd of April 1987 in Jos, Nigeria. He hails from Anambra state, Eastern Nigeria but was brought up in Northern Nigeria.

He was picked up at the age of 12 from over 3,000 at the Pepsi Football Academy, and a team is well known for travelling around the country- Nigeria scouting for young footballers handpicked Mikel Obi, and from there he joined Plateau United.
