The federal government of Nigeria and Joint Board Tax (JTB) have agreed to increase the fees charged for vehicle number plates and driving licences nationwide. The Joint Board Tax (JTB), in a letter dated July 30, 2021, signed by the board secretary, Obomeghfe Nana-Aisha, asked federal and state agencies to implement the new fees.

In the newly approved rates, the standard private and commercial number is N18,750 against the old rate of N12,500, the motorcycle number is N5,000 from N3,000 and the fancy number plate is now N200,000 from N80,000.

1. Standard Private Vehicles

Depending on the state, a new standard private car plate number often costs between ₦12,000 and ₦20,000. The registration fee may vary between ₦10,000 and ₦15,000.

However, the typical cost of this certificate is between ₦5,000 and ₦7,000. And the cost of a vehicle identification tag (VIT) is between ₦1,000 and ₦2,000.

2. Commercial Vehicles

Usually ranging from ₦20,000 to ₦30,000, the plate number charge for commercial vehicles can be more. The registration fee is between ₦15,000 and ₦25,000. And the certificate of roadworthiness is approximately ₦7,000 to ₦10,000.

Also, the VIT (vehicle identification tag): is approximately 2,000.

3. Motorcycles

From ₦3,000 to ₦5,000, the plate number charge is comparatively less for motorcycles. The usual registration fee is between ₦2,000 and ₦3,000.

Also, motorcycles typically do not require a roadworthiness certificate. And the Vehicle Identity Tag (VIT) is between ₦500 and ₦1,000.
