Starting Sunday, June 8, 2025, the cost of obtaining or renewing a driver’s license and vehicle number plates in Nigeria will increase, following the approval of a revised price structure by the Joint Tax Board (JTB).

This development, which applies nationwide, is part of a broader effort to integrate enhanced security features and to accommodate rising production costs, as stated in a public service announcement issued in May 2025.

“The Joint Tax Board (JTB) has approved a new price adjustment for motor vehicle and motorcycle number plates and driver’s license. The price adjustment is due to the introduction of enhanced security features on the number plates and driver’s license, and the incidental cost of production. The new price is effective Sunday, June 8, 2025,” the statement read.

The JTB, Nigeria’s top tax coordination authority, has directed all relevant agencies — including motor vehicle licensing authorities and FRSC offices — to implement the new pricing structure across the country.

Govt Motorcycle Standard₦10,000₦20,000
Govt Motorcycle Fancy₦20,000₦50,000

Why the Price Increase?

According to the JTB, the price hike is largely due to:

  • The introduction of upgraded security technology in the production of driver’s licenses and number plates.
  • Inflation and rising material costs have affected the cost of production.

These changes are aimed at improving the security and traceability of vehicles and drivers on Nigerian roads.

Official Channels for Processing

To avoid fraudulent activities and ensure compliance:

  • Apply for licenses and plates through the National Vehicle Identification System (NVIS).
  • Visit the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) website for detailed information.
  • Engage with your state’s Motor Vehicle Licensing Authority (MVLA) for in-person services.

Implications for Vehicle Owners

This price revision affects all vehicle categories, including private cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles. Vehicle owners are advised to:

  • Budget accordingly for renewals and new registrations.
  • Ensure timely processing to avoid penalties.
  • Stay informed about any further changes through official channels.

What Nigerian Drivers Should Do Now

If you’re a vehicle owner or planning to register a new car, here’s what you should know:

  • Budget ahead for these revised rates, especially if your license or number plate is up for renewal.
  • Process your documents through official channels such as the National Vehicle Identification System (NVIS) or your state’s Motor Vehicle Licensing Authority.
  • Avoid middlemen and unofficial agents to protect yourself from fraud and inflated charges.
