LagosRide, Uber, and Bolt are some of the popular ride-hailing services available to people in Lagos. You can easily order a ride to your destinations within Lagos with these services. However, one challenge persists, and it’s the cost of fares. The individual cost run-down of riding with any of these services differs.

Uber and Bolt have been around in Lagos for years, but only recently was LagosRide introduced. Now, many people in Lagos are moving towards using LagosRide more often, and the reason is affordability. Lagos is one of the cities in Nigeria with expensive transportation costs, this article compares the prices of each of these services to determine which is cheaper and will save Lagosians costs.

The LagosRide Service

In 2021, the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu unveiled the Lagos Ride, a ride-hailing service for those within Lagos. The rides come in a sky blue and white colour, and it has circulated in Lagos state.

The vehicles used for this service belong solely to the Lagos State government until they’ve completed their payments before ownership will be transferred.

Regarding cost, Lagos Ride brings an exciting approach to the ride-hailing service. With their service, you can book and share the ride cost with someone who is also going to a similar destination.

Many people in Lagos are becoming interested in using Lagos Ride because of the splitting bill policy that benefits Lagosians who spend a reasonable amount of their income on monthly transportation.

Uber Service In Lagos

Uber is another ride-hailing service that has been in Lagos for years now. Although popular in Lagos, only a few Lagosians use Uber services like the Bolt hailing service. But, those who encourage others to use Uber instead cite the price as an important reason.

Uber is believed to offer fairer prices compared to other hailing services. But earlier in October, the company increased its base fare. The base fare, initially ₦340, rose to ₦450, and the minimum and per-minute fare went from ₦600 to ₦650. Also, customers will now be paying ₦16 per minute more than the usual ₦14.

Uber disclosed that this increase resulted from the country’s economic conditions and fuel prices.

Someone needs to dig in to how Uber lost the ride hailing market to bolt in Lagos. I think it started with the rates.

Although Uber existed before its arrival, Bolt is Nigeria’s most popular ride-hailing service. Many Lagosians find it handy; by default, many use Bolt as their go-to service.

Earlier in 2022, Bolt also increased the prices from the regular base fare of ₦280 to ₦300 base fare. Bolt customers per minute charges were increased from ₦13 to ₦15. The minimum ride fare on the app was also changed to ₦600.

Lagos Ride, Uber, Bolt: Which Is Cheaper For Lagosians?

Overall, the cheaper service for Lagosians is Lagos Ride because of the bill-splitting method. Two people going towards the same location or route can contribute and split a bill. That’s to say if you’re going from Ikeja to Victoria Island and the transport fare is ₦7,000, you can split bills and save costs with someone going towards that route.

Uber also is affordable for Lagosians. The company introduced its cheaper service, UberX, which allows Lagosians to book services at a cheaper rate. However, UberX has shortcomings, especially during surge hours when customers can’t quickly get a ride on the app.

Bolt, on the other hand, is known for their notorious prices. By far, Bolt is the most expensive in Lagos. Although the minimum fare is ₦600, getting a Bolt trip at that rate is hard. Additionally, many Nigerians have complained on social media about how Bolt drivers hijack prices during rush hours and the rainy season.

Uber and Bolt surges are becoming ridiculous. The economics of ride hailing was never sustainable, but in Lagos, it's pure madness. Is there a (open-source) way to verify that indeed there was a surge as a price control mechanism? Or is this how the algorithm randomly goes crazy?

Conclusion

If you are looking for a cheaper ride-hailing service in Lagos, Lagos Ride is the answer. To always enjoy the cheaper prices for trips, have one to two people(known or unknown) going towards your location you can split bills with.
